New Cranes on the Move at DP World Southampton

crane being moved onto the quaysideThe two new super post-panamax cranes at DP World Southampton were moved to the quayside over the weekend (4-6 July 2008), in preparation for the final commissioning stages before they commenced action.

It took approximately one and half hours to move each crane, weighing in excess of 1,000 tonnes, using specialist transportation trailers which are moved using a remote control, from the construction site in Lima stack to the final resting place on berths 205/6.

Talking about the move, Campbell Mason, Managing Director, DP World Southampton, said:

“It takes a large amount of coordination and specialised heavy duty equipment to move the two new cranes due to their sheer scale, each weighing over 1,000 tonnes and over 80 metres high (boomed down).  The movement of both cranes through the stacking area and onto the quayside went very smoothly.  The cranes have now been positioned on the quayside and are fully operational.”

In February this year, DP World Southampton placed an order for two further identical cranes which are due to be delivered in August next year.
