Don't They Make it Look Simple

The construction of two super post-panamax cranes is by no means a simple job it takes a lot of coordination and team work to construct, move, commission and then operate the cranes on a vessel.

Since the arrival back in late March of the large sections of the cranes, likened by some to a Mecano set for adults, a team of engineers set to work on the construction.  Once constructed, the next task was to move the cranes from Lima stack down onto the quayside.  Finally on the quayside the cranes were welcomed into service with a pyrotechnics display watched by customers, staff and other key stakeholders on 11 July 2008.  With the festivities over it was time to start servicing the vessels and for the drivers to get used to the layout of the new crane cabs.

DP World Southampton has captured each stage of the commissioning process from arrival to operation in a short promotional video which you can watch by visiting www.dpworldsouthampton.com

Talking about the video, Campbell Mason, Managing Director, DP World Southampton, said:

“Our two new cranes are amongst the largest currently standing in the world today and this video allows the viewer to see just what is involved in getting them operational.  It shows how they evolve from individual pieces to the massive working structures that we see standing proud and operating on our quayside today.”

DP World Southampton has a further two super post-panamax cranes on order which are scheduled to be delivered into operation Summer 2009.
