Third Crane Rail Works Update

Third crane rail works underwayEngineering works to extend the terminal’s third crane rail down onto 204 berth continue to progress well despite the inclement weather throughout October and November.

The first 50 metres of this phase of works will be complete by the end of December which will return berth 205 to full operational use and mean that the whole of berth 205 will be able to accommodate the terminal’s super post-panamax gantry cranes.

The remaining 330 metres are scheduled to be completed by the end of Q1 2010 and once completed will enable super post-panamax gantry cranes to operate on almost 80% of the terminal.

Talking about the work, David Holt, Engineering Projects Manager, said:

“This is the third phase of works to install the third crane rail and in each phase we have been able to build on our experience to improve the speed at which the works can be completed.  This project is another good example of how cohesion between departments leads to a successful end and minimises the disruption felt by all.”

During this phase of works, more than 8300 cu/metres of concrete will be used which equates in weight to almost 20,500 tonnes.  To strengthen all this concrete, approximately 487 tonnes of steel reinforcement will also be used.
