Pictured L to R: Jordan McCourt, Tim Campbell and Steve SaitThe first winner of the BBC’s ‘The Apprentice’, Tim Campbell, visited DP World Southampton on Friday 23 January 2009 as part of a wider programme organised by the Learning & Skills Council to promote the benefits, impact and value of apprenticeships and apprentices to both individuals and businesses.

During his visit, Tim met with the terminal’s engineering apprentices in their own environment to see first-hand what kind of tasks they get involved in and how the company manages the apprenticeship scheme.

Talking about the visit, Adam Pointer, Engineering Training Officer, said:

“It was a great opportunity for us to be part of the Learning & Skills Council’s programme and meet Tim.  He was a very interesting and inspiring person to meet and took time to speak with each of our apprentices to find out their experience of apprenticeships and working for the company.”

DP World Southampton has been employing engineering apprentices since 1989 and offers a four year Advanced Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering Maintenance to attain full combined electrical and mechanical status.  The apprenticeship begins with off the job training at Southampton Engineering Training Association (SETA) to develop basic engineering skills followed by a planned training and development programme within the various DP World Southampton engineering and support departments to develop the required skills to complete their NVQ Level 3.
