DP World Southampton's Latest Super Post-Panamax Cranes on the Move

Crane moving through the stackOver the weekend of the 5-7 June 2009, DP World Southampton’s latest super post-panamax cranes were relocated to the quayside in preparation for final testing prior to commencing operations.

It took around one and half hours to move each crane, weighing in excess of 1,000 tonnes, using specialist transportation trailers.  The cranes travelled from their construction site in Lima stack to their new home of berth 206.

Talking about the move, Russ Broughton, 206 Workshop Manager, said:

“It takes a huge amount of coordination to move the cranes onto the quayside safely, particularly given their size!  A clear route must be agreed and everyone working on the terminal needs to

be aware of
what is happening and when – communication is very much the key.

I’m pleased to say the move went very smoothly and both cranes are now positioned on the quayside, next to their sister cranes which were commissioned in July last year.“

The cranes were gradually constructed on site at the terminal after sections were shipped in from Ireland and Germany in March.
