DP World Southampton Takes Delivery of Crane Components

The Beluga Formation carrying the crane componentsThe first sections of DP World Southampton new super post-panamax gantry cranes arrived on Wednesday 4 March 2009 aboard the Beluga Formation from Fenit, Ireland.

The remaining components arrived during the early hours of Sunday 8 March 2009 onboard the Iceland from Rostock, Germany.

Talking about the delivery, Russ Broughton, 206 Workshop Manager, said:

“Having personally seen the crane components in raw sheet material form at Liebherr’s manufacturing plant in Ireland, it’s an impressive sight to see them manufactured into these large sections which will be pieced together over the coming months to make up the terminal’s latest super post-panamax cranes.

The main task now is constructing the cranes and getting them ready for commissioning into operation during the summer.”

Once discharged from the vessels, the crane sections were moved to the Lima stack area of the terminal where the cranes will be constructed over the next few months before being transported to the quay on specialist trailers during the summer.
